On February 5th and 6th, 2019, Mtre Paul Ryan gave a presentation on the latest news in tax litigation and tax administration at “midi” conferences organized by the APFF and the Laurentides Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Group in Montreal and Laval. He touched on a number of topics, including new federal trends (budgets and programs, voluntary disclosures and international compliance, the CRA’s audit powers and their limits, large cost allocations for tax cases, etc.), new provincial trends (investigation of tax evasion and requests for prison sentences, heavier penalties for cases where the GAAR applies in Quebec, new Quebec program of remuneration of informers) and recent jurisprudence (rectification or cancellation of transactions, cancellation interest and penalties, pledges for donations, HIPC for amounts paid in connection with directors’ liability, etc.).
